The power of a kinder egg

Last Night Sadie and I hopped on the subway and headed downtown Toronto to join our lovely friends at UrbanEx in handing out kinder eggs! Sadie had a few firsts, her first subway ride, her first dinner with mommy and her first encounter with a homeless person. Sadie approached a woman to give her an egg and the woman insisted on giving her candy, Sadie waited patiently and accepted the candy. We also gave her a pair of mittens as she had lost one mitten (we came home with the lonely glove). After taking pictures for a couple from Venezuela and chasing them down to give them a Kinderegg  (really worth the trip to Canada folks!) we headed home but the giving did not stop! We gave one to a young lady and had a great conversation about giving and how it does not take a lot of commitment but we also shared a few things we have learned this year! (listed below)

What we have learned in a year!
    • Not every homeless person likes coffee... offer a hot drink if you would like to warm someone up!
    • Lots of stuff isn't always better! handing someone a bag FULL of toiletries may cause a problem, they already carry what they own on their backs or in a bag so a warm pair of socks, deodorant and tooth brush with tooth paste is just the right size! (and you can bless MORE people that way!)
    • Keep finger mittens in your bag! (these can be used to bless a business man who forgot his gloves in his car, a homeless person, or a kid on their way to school!)
    • Suspended coffee's make everyone smile! Sometimes we will order an extra medium and ask them to choose a regular who comes in and tell them its been paid for... even the staff get excited!
    • Learn someone's name! if you pass someone everyday, or are in a lineup with them most days, learn their name... its a little less lonely then! :)
    • Keep a bag of pasta and a favorite sauce in your pantry, a friend may be having a hard time and a simple meal they don't have to worry about will lighten their load, even for a moment.
    • Sticky notes are always fun to scrawl an encouraging note on and leave on a door or car!
    • Stuck in traffic? you can still share a smile! a funny hat, mask or clown nose will spread smiles... or funny looks... but I am sure they will tell someone about it!

    1. Sadie is a tremendous young lady! And, that is no surprise since her parents have such generous and loving hearts. I really appreciate the things that you shared in your "learned in a year"--what an incredible family!
